Jack McVea – McVoutie’s Central Avenue Blues
Delmark DE 756 (2002) – Apollo Series
Compact Disc
With Lucky Thompson, Wild Bill Moore, Wynonie Harris, Duke Henderson, Cee Pee Johnson, Rabon Tarrant, Teddy Buckner, Bob Mosley, 1945. Jack McVea’s nickname was bestowed by Slim Gaillard at his recording session with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. On “Slim’s Jam”, when Bird doesn’t have a reed Gaillard says, “McVoutie’s got a reed!” (McVea says Bird actually did show sans reed.) McVea’s biggest success, “Open The Door Richard”, turned the classic comedy routine into an R&B standard. He was also in the cast of the original Jazz At The Philharmonic. This album presents McVea’s blues side with singers Tarrant, Harris, & Henderson but there are instrumental sides and smoking solos making this CD enjoyable for jazz fans also. 23 tracks, seven previously unissued.
