Illinois Jacquet – Jumpin’ At Apollo
Delmark DE 538 [Apollo Series]
Compact Disc (2002)
With Sir Charles Thompson, Leo Parker, Joe Newman, Bill Doggett, Charles Mingus, Freddie Green, Denzil Best, Wynonie Harris, 1945-47.
It’s hard to believe that Illinois Jacquet, who at this time, in early 2002, can still outswing and outblow any tenor player on the planet, is in his eightieth year of life. All of 19 when he waxed his immortal solo on Lionel Hampton’s 1942 “Flying Home”, Jacquet launched a whole new school of jazz tenor. He made a spectacular appearance at the very first Jazz at the Philharmonic concert and had started to do some overblowing on the horn, finding notes way above the tenor’s normal compass. Features 16 Jacquet sides, five alternate takes and two Wynonie Harris vocals with accompanimet by Jacquet and his group, 66 minutes.
