    Compact Disc (2000)

For the past year the Chicago Underground has been turning the heads of critics and fans across the country with their unique sound that balances free jazz with electronica and tuneful post-bop compositions. The group consists of four of the busiest members of Chicago’s thriving creative music scene who have performed and recorded with AACM stalwarts Fred Anderson and Ernest Dawkins, as well as prominent avant ensembles Tortoise and Isotope 217. Featuring Rob Mazurek, cornet; Chad Taylor, drums; Noel Kupersmith, bass; and Jeff Parker, guitar. Recorded and mixed by Bundy K. Brown.

“From time to time the basic sound of this hot and earnest young bohemian jazz group has all the newness of the Art Ensemble of Chicago 30 years ago.” – Ben Ratliff, New York Times

“Mazurek shimmers warmly with the sounds of the early postbop era, and everybody else in the group is either in Morocco or at the video arcade, and it works.” – Time Out New York
