Piney Brown / Eddie Mack – Hoot & Holler Saturday Night!
Delmark DE 754 (2002) – Apollo Series
With Willis Jackson and Bobby Smith, 1948-50.
The foundation of Rhythm & Blues was set during the war years; big bands were stripped-down to smaller horn lead combos driven by a jumping rhythm section tailor-made for dancing. In this setting the “Blues Shouter” became an absolute necessity. While Big Joe Turner is the father of this style, the flamboyant Wynonie Harris popularized the shouter’s role as a leather-lunged hell-raiser. Two singers following Harris’ footsteps were Piney Brown and Eddie Mack. This collection gives ample evidence of the lasting contributions of Brown and Mack to the growth of R&B during its formative years. Hoot & Holler Saturday Night! contains 22 tracks, including seven previously unissued!
