    Delmark DE 561
    Compact Disc (2006)

The longstanding, elusive but ever-new challenge of playing in ways that are truly free but also undeniably jazz is met on “Several Lights” by three young veterans of the burgeoning Chicago new music scene (cornetist Josh Berman, tenor saxophonist Keefe Jackson, and drummer Frank Rosaly) and from Switzerland, tuba virtuoso Marc Unternährer–collectively known as Chicago Luzerne Exchange. Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune has referred to “the seemingly telepathic rapport” that Berman and Jackson enjoy — adding that “they respond to each other with extraordinary alacrity and poise.” The quicksilver Rosaly is a listening, compositionally-minded drummer, and Unternährer handles his basso instrument with similar sensitivity and, at times, a paradoxical lightfootedness.
