New amazing photo gallery exhibit at Delmark – Please come celebrate the supremely talented photographer/journalist Michael Jackson with his 25 year association with Delmark Records!

Delmark’s Art Gallery hosts an opening for the next exhibit, of art and photos by jazz journalist Michael Jackson. Unveiling of a special photo from the memorial for bassist Harrison Bankhead.
Come celebrate 70 years of legendary indie label Delmark records next Wednesday September 6th, 5-9pm.
Michael Jackson has been associated with the many-splendored imprint for 25 years since he was hired to write liner notes in 1998 and he’s shot sessions over the decades with some favorite musicians.
The Delmark catalogue is a deep dive, embracing jazz that is trad/Dixieland, groove’n’swing, avant/improv/experimental, not to mention the crucial blues archives.
On show will be images of such inimitable creative forces as Nicole Mitchell (pictured), Fred Anderson, Von and George Freeman, Muhal Richard Abrams, John Young and Eddie Johnson, Wadada Leo Smith, Keefe Jackson, Kahil El’Zabar, Avreeayl Ra, Ed Wilkerson, Jason Stein, Dee Alexander, Roscoe Mitchell, Jeb Bishop, Ari Brown, Josh Berman, Red Holloway, Bobby Broom, Ernest Kabeer Dawkins, Chris Foreman, Rob Mazurek, Dwight Trible, Frank Rosaly, Robert Barry, Tomeka Reid, Hamiet Bluiett, Malachi Thompson, David Murray, Archie Shepp and Illinois Jacquet etc, including the unveiling of a giant commemorative image from late bass-ace Harrison Bankhead’s memorial at Constellation back in June, commissioned by Julia Miller.

Michael Jackson is an interdisciplinary artist immersed in journalism, photography, fine art printmaking, music performance and composition.
He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was awarded the James Nelson Raymond fellowship prize.
Continuing work started in London UK as jazz editor for the Guardian, Telegraph and Evening Standard, he has been a regular correspondent for New City, Downbeat, The Chicago Sun-Times and Jazzwise among other publications.
A member of the Chicago Photography Collective, his prolific photo work has been widely published and exhibited; he was nominated for the Lona Foote-Bob Parent Photography Award for career excellence by the international Jazz Journalists Association in 2011, 2012, 2016 and was the recipient of the award in 2018.
Also a saxophonist, Jackson leads an eclectic sextet Bangers and Mash and jazz trio Sweet Used to Be.
Active as an educator, he has taught at SAIC, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and Evanston Art Center among other institutions.
