Clarence “Jelly” Johnson – Low Down Papa
Delmark DE 813 (2011)
Compact Disc
Originally recorded in Chicago during the mid to late 1920’s by the Capitol Music Roll Company and issued as nickelodeon piano rolls, these are some of the rarest hot piano solos ever made! This CD feature rolls transcribed by Clarence “Jelly” Johnson, one of the finest blues players of the ’20s, along with Jimmy Blythe. In 2007, Delmark issued Blythe’s Messin’ Around Blues (Delmark 792) from the same set of rolls; and with the help of today’s digital technology, these rolls sound richer and more full than ever before! The piano roll performances presented here were recorded using modern recording techniques from a “live” player piano and provide a far clearer record of their musical talents than the early 78 RPM shellac records.
Includes “Moanin’ The Blues”, “It’s All Over Now”, “Have Mercy”, “Graveyard Bound”, “That’s Your Yass Yass Yass”, “Corn Trimmers”, “The Bye Bye Blues”, “Five O’ Clock Stomp”, and more!
