Dink Johnson – Mr. Johnson Signing Off (w/ Special Guest Russ Gilman)
Delmark DE 646 [Euphonic Series]
Compact Disc (2004)
Dink Johnson, piano (1-18) Russ Gilman, piano (19-20) John Joseph, drums
Dink Johnson was born in New Orleans around 1880, and was the younger brother of Bill Johnson, King Oliver’s great bass player. Dink played a swinging, stomping, Jelly-like piano style. His repertoire was as unique as his style, containing tunes of his own and others long forgotten. Dink had a rollicking, contagious sense of humor which comes through on these recordings. Notes by Paul Affeldt enclosed.
3,4,11 recorded November 24, 1950. Remainder unknown, but thought to be recorded around the same time.
