Tab Smith – Top ‘n’ Bottom
Delmark DE 499 [United Series]
Compact Disc (1997)
Smokin’ and smokey jazz, R&B and blues! In the ’50s Tab Smith shared the alto sax spotlight with Earl Bostic and Johnny Hodges. He had a rich sound developed from two decades with jazz greats Count Basie, Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday, the blues-packed Lucky Millinder band and others. Tab went out on his own in ’43 recording steadily for various lables with a remarkably stable personnel including Fletcher Henderson’s famous drummer, Walter Johnson. As leader of the virtual house band at Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom, Smith’s reputation grew greatly. He had a huge hit for United with “Because of You,” the biggest hit the label ever had selling over 250,000 copies. This third album of Smith’s complete United recordings features mostly previously unissued material from late ’53 and ’54.
