Including classics from the American and Dutch jazz traditions, as well as originals, the trio digresses between composition and improvisation, sobriety and uninhibitedness, playfulness and formality. Covering new ground, the band discovers and ignores, grabs and releases, creates and then lets go.\n\n\n\nThe music of These Things Happen is a fusion of sounds and modes inhabiting the spaces between Chicago and Amsterdam. The music of Misha Mengelberg, Dewey Redman, Herbie Nichols, and Thelonious Monk are all jumping-off points. Monk’s music, in particular, has produced entire musical languages with conceptual lives of their own. These Things Happen has fed this notion back into the tunes, leading to an insistent stutter-time version of the famous Bemsha Swing, in which the improvisation actually happens during the head of the composition, rather than in solos.\n\n\n\nThe band’s newest album will be released in August 2022.\n\n\n\nThe musicians:\n\n\n\nKeefe Jackson – saxophone\n\n\n\nJason Roebke – bass\n\n\n\nMikel Patrick Avery – drums\n\n\n\nTBA – piano\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2022\n\n\n\nLOGAN CENTER PERFORMANCE HALL\n\n\n\n3:00PM-4:00PM HIN+QWANQWA\n\n\n\n5:00PM-6:00PM HIN+QWANQWA\n\n\n\n7:15PM-8:15PM DAVID VIRELLES (SOLO)\n\n\n\n9:30PM-10:30PM MIGUEL DE LA CERNA (TBA)\n\n\n\nLOGAN CENTER PERFORMANCE PENTHOUSE\n\n\n\n2:00PM-3:00PM JIM BAKER (SOLO)\n\n\n\n6:00PM-7:00PM KEEFE JACKSON: THESE THINGS HAPPEN\n\n\n\n9:30-10:30PM MANKWE NDOSI AND BODY MEMORI\n\n\n\nLOGAN CENTER SCREENING ROOM (ARTIST TALKS)\n\n\n\n1:30 PM-2:30 PM PAUL STEINBECK: SOUND EXPERIMENTS: THE MUSIC OF THE AACM\n\n\n\n3:00 PM – 4:00 PM MICHAEL ALLEMANA: VON FREEMAN: MUSIC, STORYTELLING, AND METAPHYSICS\n\n\n\nThe Reva & David Logan Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary arts center at the University of Chicago, located south of the Midway Plaisance at the corner of East 60th Street and Drexel Avenue.
