The festival brings together the progeny of Chicago Blues legends in Daughters and Sons of the Blues, celebrates intergenerational relationships between artists separated chronologically by six decades but glued together by the songs of their forebears, and explores the many branches of the Blues tree from the roots to the fruits. Other events include our first commission of original blues music, a photography exhibition, book signings, interviews, and conversations honoring the history of the blues on the South Side and beyond.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLurrie Bell\n\n\n\nBorn in Chicago in 1958, blues guitarist Lurrie Bell is the son of harmonica player Carey Bell. His father’s band, the Carey Bell Blues Band, often rehearsed in the family’s apartment, and Bell grew up among music and musicians. He taught himself how to play the guitar and eventually played with his father’s band in a couple of club performances. In 1977, Bell, Freddie Dixon (son of Willie Dixon), and harp player Billy Branch formed Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues. Bell left the band in 1982, and spent the rest of the decade as a session musician and touring with KoKo Taylor’s band. In 1984 he and his father recorded the album Son of a Gun. Bell continues to play and record.\n
