The Andrew Scott Quartet meets Jon-Erik Kellso & Dan Block
Nostalgia

Sackville 2073

Andrew Scott's latest project for Sackville takes a fresh look at some of the classic bebop tunes of the 1940s based upon the harmonies of popular songs. Both Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young pointed the way towards the structural concepts of the Bebop era. A definitive exploration of these developments and their structural integrity can be fund in Scott DeVeaux's "The Birth of Bebop" (A Social and Musical History).

Both Jon-Erik Kellso and Dan Block are part of a pool of New York musicians who can be heard in repertoire bands led by Vince Giordano, David Oswald and David Berger. They are JAZZ musicians. Their skill and imagination is a perfect foil for Andrew's musical conception in "Nostalgia". All but three of the tunes in this collection were written by musicians who were part of the "modern jazz" movement of the 1940s.

The Toronto team of pianist Mark Eisenman, bassist Pat Collins, drummer Joel Haynes and Andrew Scott's guitar provides the rhythmic thrust which blends together a Swing feel with the angularity of Hot House, Vicky's Dream, Quasimodo and Salute To The Bandbox. The harmonic structures include September In The Rain, All The Things You Are, Body And Soul and Embraceable You.
