The Ed Bickert Trio
Out of the Past
“Out Of The Past” rescues from obscurity two days of recordings by the Ed Bickert Trio in 1976 - issued here for the first time. Bassist Don Thompson and drummer Terry Clarke are featured with the guitarist in a program of quality popular songs (When Sunny Gets Blue, Deep In A Dream, Have You Met Miss Jones) and jazz standards (Con Alma, Soft Winds, Skating In Central Park, I'm Just A Lucky So And So, Nica's Dream),
Andrew Scott observes that “the majority of the tunes are performed as medium swingers, that deceptively easy sounding tempo at which Bickert clearly hears his music. Although Bickert's music is capable of eliciting both a mental and visceral reaction, one never gets the sense that the guitarist is trying to patronize or “dumb down” for the audience. He simply speaks in a coherent and direct fashion (both on and off the bandstand) articulating his point without unnecessary filigree or flourish.”
This was a very creative period's in Ed Bickert's musical life. His performances with Frank Rosolino at Bourbon Street (captured on disc as “Thinking About You” Sackville SK2CD-5007) had taken him to a new level.
This newly discovered session finds him stretching and bending the boundaries of the material - sometimes accentuating the melody while, on other occasions, barely making a nod in the melody's direction as he improvises in stunning new directions.
