NEW RELEASES OF AN EXPERIMENTAL
NATURE
THE NEW NEW
We start with the second disk from the Peter
Brötzmann Die Like a Dog quartet Titled "Little Birds
Have Fast Hearts"(FMP), a great follow up to the first D. L.
a D. disk. Brötzmann can also be heard on Thomas
Borgmann's "Stalker Songs" on CIMP (see CIMP ad this issue).
The great Cecil Taylor has released a solo disk on FMP
called "The Tree of Life" as well as a quartet disk "Qu'a"
on the Cadence label. Rounding out FMP's latest batch of
disks is a solo Phil Minton recording "A Doughnut in One
Hand" and a double CD of conductions by Butch Morris "Berlin
Skyscraper".
A little closer to home finds Ken Vandermark with a recent
Wire article and a slew of new releases. Two disks with Mats
Gustafsson's AALY Trio, the first on Silkheart "Hidden in
the Stomach" (a studio recording) the second on Wobbly Rail
"Stumble"(recorded live at the Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity
Temple) . Both are wonderful meetings from these two like
minded artists. Ken is also on the Joe Morris trio disk on
Knitting Factory. "Like Rays". Chicago's Atavistic records
has released the NRG Ensemble's "Bejazzo gets a Facelift" as
well as the Vandermark 5's "Target or Flag". Vandermark's
DK3 also has a new one on 1/4 Stick, called "Neurons".
Steve Lacy released two solo projects in the last few
months, the first on the fiery Wobbly Rail label called
"Solo"(also recorded at the Unity Temple) and the second on
Tzadik called "Sands". Norway's Frode Gjersted (tenor) has
also released two new titles, "Through the Woods" on CIMP
(with the criminally under recorded Bobby Bradford) and
"Remember to Forget" on Circulasione Totale with one of the
great modern rhythm sections of Hamid Drake, drums &
William Parker, bass (these 2 can also be heard together on
the Brötzmann "Little Birds..." cd).
And finally for you 33 1/3 junkies we have gotten a number
of ESP disk titles on 180 gram vinyl, from Albert Ayler;
"Bells", "Spirits Rejoice" & "Spiritual Unity", from Sun
Ra "Heliocentric Worlds Volumes 1 & 2" and "Nothing Is",
plus Ornette Coleman's "Town Hall Concert". After a long
absence we have gotten Paul Lovens' Po Torch Records back in
stock, including a couple great Evan Parker titles "The
Ericle of Dolphi" and "Das Hohe Lied" (with the
Schlippenbach quartet) both double LPs, Günter
Christmann & Paul Lovens duo "In Actu" and a wonderful
EP by the Quartet Moderne "The Strange and the
Commonplace".
