Straight ahead tenor sax bebop at its best! Harold Ousley had the good fortune to study with the legendary Captain Walter Dyett at Chicago's DuSable High School. (Johnny Griffin, Gene Ammons, Nat Cole were just a few of Dyett's other students.) He performed with jazz greats Billie Holiday, Sun Ra, Freddie Hubbard, Dinah Washington, Howard McGhee, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and many others. He's had albums as leader for Muse, Bethlehem, J's-Way and accompanied Jack McDuff on Prestige. This album was recorded during Harold's first revisit to Chicago for a week at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase last January. Delmark took the opportunity to get Harold into its studio with the rhythm section of Jodie Christian, John Whitfield and Robert Shy. Trumpeter Art Hoyle guests on one song.
