and Africa Brass
Known for his adventurous solos and the ease with which his Freebop Band negotiates the territory between hard-bop and free-jazz boundaries. Malachi Thompson in the 70's also led a New York-based trumpet ensemble named Brass Proud [which predated Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy]. In the early 90's he expanded upon theat concept: Africa Brass features four trumpets, four trombones, bass, drums, percussion and on the title track "Lift Ev'ry Voice", eight vocalists.
